Drug delivery system is an important part of success full health management. Choice for route and time of drug administration is very essential for achieving success in acute and life threatening diseases. In Ayurvedic health management, ancient Acharyas have described many routes of drug delivery like mukha (oral), nasya (nasal), vasti (rectal route) etc. as well as different time of drug administration’s like pratah (morning), muhurmuhu (frequently), sagrasa (with morsel) etc. Depending on the acuteness, chronicity, and severity of the diseases as well as depending on the physico-chemical nature of the drug [i.e. acidic/alkaline etc.] route and time of drug delivery is selected for its better and quick absorption. Now days, in many cases it is preferred for sustain release of drug molecules for maintaining required constant bio-availability, hence the drug delivery system needs to be managed as per the requirement. Following the ancient drug delivery system many new drug delivery systems have also been developed to provide a new altitude for the medical science. It is expected, this review article will enlighten the ancient drug delivery system for its broader and judicious use.

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurvedic snehana procedure, wherein involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead. This procedure can be a poorvakarma (preoperative procedure) to main panchakarma or pradhan karma (Main procedure) depending upon the condition of the patient. Shirodhara is mainly indicated for neurobehavioral and psychosomatic disorders. Recent investigations report that, Shirodhara is effective in management of condition like pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Cerebellar ataxia, Essential hypertension, Psychological symptoms of Menopause, Premature ejaculation, generalized anxiety disorder and Insomnia. The exact mechanism of its mode of action in not known till date. But, Preliminary reports suggest that, this procedure has a demonstrable anxiolytic effect evidenced by decrease in Plasma noradrenaline and urinary serotonin excretion, significant decrease in rate of breathing, reduction in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate with lowered sympathetic tone.
Life style disorders are deeply affecting human health now a day. Sthoulya (Medovriddhi) and Prameha are major health issues in the present era. Musta having Botanical name Cyperus rotundus belongs to Cyperaceae Family is a drug which acts on Prameha and Medovridhi both, as mentioned by Acharya Charaka in Prameha chikitsa in Chikitsa sthana and in Lekhaniyae Mahakashaya in Sutra Sthana. Musta is having Tikta, Katu, Kashaya Rasa, Laghu , Ruksha Guna, Sheeta Virya, Katu Vipaka, Kapha-Pittahara Doshakarma. This article aims to summarise the drug Musta regarding its morphology , chemical constituents and the therapeutic application.
